Kevin Hewitt, former chair of the Dalhousie University senate, has been named as the university’s first associate dean, equity and inclusion in the faculty of science.
In this new role, Dr. Hewitt will lead the development and implementation of an equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility strategy and framework for the faculty. Dr. Hewitt first joined Dalhousie as an assistant faculty member in 2000.
Kerry Godfrey has been reappointed for a second five-year term as dean of the Dhillon School of Business at the University of Lethbridge. He will now have the added responsibility of overseeing the university’s Calgary campus. Dr. Godfrey earned a PhD from the school of planning at Oxford Brookes University and an MBA in educational management from the University of Leicester, both in the U.K.
Marcia Turner, Marcia Turner assumed the role of associate vice-president, Indigenous education and engagement at Vancouver Island University on July 18. Ms. Turner is Gitxsan from the Lax Gibuu clan, Wilp Haijimsxw, and is the owner and CEO of Daxgedim Haanak’ Nation Building, a consultancy in Indigenous governance, community development, and engagement. 
She has also served as an instructor at the University of British Columbia, North Island College, Royal Roads University and the University of Victoria. Ms. Turner is currently a PhD student in political science, specializing in Indigenous politics at the University of Hawaii.
Will Hughes has been appointed director for the school of engineering at the University of British Columbia Okanagan for a five-year term, which began July 1. Most recently he served as the director of the Nucleic Acid Memory Institute at Boise State University. Dr. Hughes earned a bachelor of science in materials science and engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University as well as a PhD in materials science and engineering from the Georgia Institute of Technology.
John Doerksen , was named Western University’s new vice-provost, students. In this role, he will handle a portfolio that comprises sports and recreation, leadership and learning, and wellness and well-being, which includes student mental-health initiatives. Previously, Dr. Doerksen served as vice-provost, academic programs at Western. He holds a PhD in systematic musicology from Western, and is a faculty member in the Don Wright Faculty of Music.
Lee Ann McKivor, began a new position as university registrar at Memorial University on Aug. 15. Previously, Dr. McKivor spent 20 years working at Western University, where she served in several roles, including associate registrar and director of student records and exam services, and associate university secretary.
On Jan. 3, 2023, Chad London will be Mount Royal University’s new provost and vice-president, academic. He is returning to Mount Royal after serving as dean of the college of kinesiology at the University of Saskatchewan for six years. Before that, he served in a variety of roles at Mount Royal, including as associate dean in the former faculty of health and community studies and as dean of the faculty of health.
Bruno Silvestre became dean of the I.H. Asper School of Business at the University of Manitoba on July 1. Since October 2021, Dr. Silvestre has served as acting dean of the school. He has also held several other appointments at U of Manitoba since he joined in 2016, including associate dean of strategic partnerships and administration, and acting department head. While in this new role, Dr. Silvestre will also continue to serve as the CPA Manitoba Chair in Business Leadership and will carry his tenured professorial appointment in the department of supply chain management.
On July 18, Heather Persson became the chief communications officer and associate vice-president, strategic communications at the University of Saskatchewan. Previously, Ms. Persson was editor-in-chief of the Saskatoon StarPhoenix and the Regina Leader-Post. Ms. Persson holds a bachelor of arts in communications and a master’s degree in administration.
Deep Saini has been appointed McGill University’s 18th principal and vice-chancellor for a five-year term effective April 1, 2023. He’ll join McGill from Dalhousie University, where he is president and vice-chancellor. A researcher in plant biology, Dr. Saini previously served as president and vice-chancellor of the University of Canberra in Australia, principal of the University of Toronto Mississauga, dean of the faculty of environment at the University of Waterloo, and director general of the Plant Biology Research Institute at Université de Montréal.
On Oct. 21, Darlene McIntosh became chancellor of the University of Northern British Columbia, the first Elder of the Lheidli T’enneh Nation (upon which the university is located) to assume the position. Ms. McIntosh is a long-standing member of the UNBC community and has played a key role in strengthening the university’s relationship with the Lheidli T’enneh Nation. She previously served as cultural advisor at the Aboriginal Resource Centre at the College of New Caledonia.
