Brandon University announced that Senator Mary Jane McCallum has been appointed the university’s next chancellor. Dr. McCallum is a citizen of the Barren Lands First Nation in Manitoba and attended Guy Hill Residential School in The Pas for 11 years. After earning a doctor of dental medicine from the University of Manitoba in 1990, she went on to provide dental care to First Nations communities, serve as an assistant professor at the U of Manitoba and manage community health programs in her home community. She was appointed to the Canadian Senate in 2017 and sits in the chamber as an independent. Her first duties as chancellor will be conferring degrees at the university’s spring convocation on May 27.
The University of King’s College will welcome Sarah Clift as its new vice-president on July 1. Before coming to King’s, Dr. Clift was a research fellow at the Freie Universität in Berlin and spent seven years living in Germany. Dr. Clift first joined King’s in 2006 after applying to be a faculty fellow in its foundation year program. Since then, she has led a study abroad course in Berlin and helped establish a summer residence program that introduces the humanities to students ages 15 to 17. She holds a PhD in social and political thought from York University and a doctoral diploma in German and European studies from York’s Centre for German and European Studies.
Shannon Chinn has been appointed chief athletics officer at the University of Saskatchewan. Ms. Chinn was most recently the director of LookSport at the Look Company, which gave her the opportunity to work on visual engagement displays at outdoor NHL games, the Pegasus World Cup horse race and Tim Hortons Field, home of the Hamilton Tiger Cats. She is a board member of Football Canada and sits on the organization’s business development committee and female development committee, and is the co-chair of its diversity task force. Ms. Chinn begins her new role on June 15.
